A charming Toronto restaurant that’s been a neighbourhood favourite for almost a decade just announced that it’ll soon be closing its doors for good.
It seems like my beloved Leslieville just can’t catch a break these days. First, it was the announcement that Mexican favourite, Barrio, is set to close down on April 1, and now, one of its contemporaries has just added its own name to the list.
This time, it’s a French bistro that’s taken the hit, as Greta Solomon’s announces they’ll be closing their doors permanently this month.
Established in May 2016, Greta Solomon’s joined a burgeoning community of more upscale restaurants in the area, like Eastside Social and Ascari Enoteca, a tradition more recently carried on by the likes of Ricky + Olivia and Tulia Osteria.
Named for owner Darlene Mitchell’s late mother and grandmother, the restaurant specializes in a comforting sort of French cuisine that, while exemplary, still feels accessible, particularly in the decidedly unstuffy neighbourhood in which it resides.
Their Thursday night $35 steak frites deal was, at least personally, a major favourite, while offerings oysters, chicken liver pate, French onion soup and butternut squash risotto all add to the 28-seat bistro’s comfortable, homey feeling, making it a staple for locals and foodies alike.
Unfortunately for the many fans that the restaurant has acrued over their 9-year stint, Darlene and the Greta Solomon’s team recently took to Instagram to announce that the restaurant would soon be shutting its doors.
“After nine years the time has come to wish Greta Solomon’s a beautiful goodbye,” the post reads.
“What an absolute glorious and crazy time it has been. Just shy of a decade, a lifetime for a restaurant.”
The post goes on to describe the pride the entire team feels in all that they’ve accomplished with the restaurant in its near-decade stint, thanking the patrons who’ve supported it over the years.
It’s not officially over for Greta Solomon’s quite yet, though; you still have until March 15 to swing by for one last meal. If you’re thinking what I’m thinking, that’s two more Thursdays for $35 steak frites.
Greta Solomon’s is located at 1118 Queen East.
