Loblaw Companies Ltd. has hired veteran European retail executive Per Bank as its next president and chief executive officer.
Bank, chief executive of Denmark’s Salling Group A/S, parent company of the Loblaws grocery chain and Shoppers Drug Mart, is expected to join the company by early 2024.
Salling Group operates department stores, supermarkets and discount stores.
Bank hired because Robert Sawyer, Chief Operating Officer of Loblaw, is set to retire at the end of the year.
Galen Weston has been president of Loblaw since 2021, when Sarah Davis retired.
He will chair Loblaw’s board of directors and will also serve as chairman and chief executive officer of the retailer’s parent company, George Weston Ltd.
