A new study from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reveals that the global cruise industry had its most significant economic impact in 2023. According to the report, the industry generated $168.6 billion globally, a 9% increase from 2019.
The report also highlighted the industry’s role in job creation. The cruise industry contributed to 1.6 million incremental jobs in 2023, paying out $56.9 billion in wages, a growth of 37% and 13%, respectively, over 2019. Additionally, the industry contributed $85.6 billion to the global GDP, with its growth surpassing that of the global economy.
The report also noted a 7% increase in passengers, with 31.7 million people choosing to cruise in 2023, up from 29.7 million in 2019.
“The cruise industry is a significant contributor to the global economy, generating billions in economic output and supporting millions of jobs,” said Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of CLIA.
The industry’s benefits extend to multiple sectors, including transportation, aviation, food and beverage, lodging, manufacturing, technology, agriculture, travel agencies, and supply chains. Furthermore, CLIA research shows that 60% of cruise passengers return to a destination they first visited on a cruise for a longer stay.
As the industry grows, so does its commitment to sustainable tourism and destination stewardship. CLIA members are working to maintain cruise destinations’ integrity, cultural heritage, and beauty.
The full report and region-specific studies for the United States, Europe, and Canada will be posted on CLIA’s website in the coming month.
