Unforgettable Performance in ‘The Silence of the Lambs’
Smith has built a long and respected résumé that includes some of Hollywood’s best television shows, but her performance as the abducted daughter of a U.S. senator in Jonathan Demme’s 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs has cemented her status as an icon in film history.
For her role as the terrified girl in the well, Smith had to gain weight—but she has long held affection for the film, which starred Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster.
While giving a tour of the Pennsylvania home that served as the set for Buffalo Bill’s chilling lair, Smith told CBS, “It’s a great movie,” she said. “It totally holds up. It’s almost perfect, I have to say. I’ve seen it recently and I get why it holds up. I think if you make something great, it should hold up.”
