Guelph, Waterloo Region get share of provincial gas tax funding
The City of Guelph has received nearly $3.18 million in gas tax funding from the Ontario government.
The annual funding round was announced by the state on Thursday and aims to cover costs for operational and transportation improvements.
This year’s amount is less than 2022, when Royal City received $3.25 million in gas tax funding.
The Waterloo region received about $11.9 million from the government.
A total of 107 Ontario municipalities receive gas tax funding.
Funding for this program is determined by the amount of liters of gas sold in the previous year, and municipalities that support public transit services within their communities receive 2 cents for each liter of state gas tax revenue collected.
It can be used to extend service hours, purchase transport vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility, and upgrade infrastructure.
To compensate for the decline in gas sales resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s program includes a one-time additional funding of $80 million to help local governments continue to support transportation systems. increase.
