Oscar-winning director and bona fide Toronto mans, Guillermo del Toro, just shouted out another one of his favourite spots in the city.

A longtime Toronto resident, it seems as though there’s no bigger fan of the city than celebrated Mexican director, Guillermo del Toro, and I, frankly, cannot get enough of it.

Beyond choosing the city as a backdrop for several of his films, including his 2017 Academy Award-winning feature, Shape of Water, del Toro regularly shouts out the businesses and areas of the city he loves.

From bookstores to video shops, the director is not shy about showing his appreciation for Toronto’s various businesses, and most recently he’s put the spotlight on one of his favourite Toronto restaurants.

While del Toro’s affinity for Pai (and any other establishment where Chef Nuit Regular is in the kitchen, for that matter) is well-documented, this time he took to X to praise Leslieville’s Hastings Snack Bar.

“Right now my favourite coffee cup and full breakfast in this city,” he writes of the Hastings Avenue restaurant and cafe, which specializes in Polish comfort food and baked treats.

The director’s most recent project, an adaptation of Frankenstein starring a heavyweight cast including Star Wars’ Oscar Isaac, Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi and Pearl star, Mia Goth (to name only a few) wrapped its filming in Toronto on Sept. 30, but del Toro, ever the cinematic 6ix God, remains in town.

A release date for the film, which is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix, has yet to be announced.
