What is the plot of Season 13 of When Calls the Heart?
***Spoiler warning***
If you haven’t watched Season 12, STOP READING and return after you have watched ALL of Season 12.
With Elizabeth, Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich), Nathan (Kevin McGarry), and Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller) headed to Cape Fullerton, we’ll see if they stay in the city for Jack’s health or if they return home to Hope Valley. With Little Jack’s grandmother, Charlotte Thornton (Brooke Shields), now in Cape Fullerton running a boarding house, will Elizabeth decide to stay because of her son and familial ties with her late husband, Jack (Daniel Lissing)?
We’ll continue to see the relationship between Elizabeth and Nathan evolve along with their respective children. With Little Jack’s recent diabetes diagnosis, we imagine dealing with the chronic disease will work its way into more episodes in Season 13. These storylines will likely be entwined with Dr. Carter (Andrea Brooks) and local pharmacist and newlywed Mei Suo Hickam (Amanda Wong).
It looks like we’ll see more of Edie Martell (Miranda MacDougall) and Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) as well. While they’ve kept things strictly business, we hope there’s a bit of romance in the air for these two. Edie appears to be setting up shop in Hope Valley, sharing office space with Bill (Jack Wagner). Romance may also be blossoming for Allie and Oliver (Jacob Shoemay), but we’ll have to wait and see. We know he’ll be around for at least another year as Nathan’s new deputy.
We hope to see Bill and Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) team up again to solve another mystery (Coulter-Avery Detective Agency, anyone?). We imagine we’ll see more or Rosemary juggling motherhood, the newspaper, perhaps another town play, her radio shows, and Lee (Kavan Smith)!
How will Minnie (Natasha Burnett) and Joseph (Viv Leacock) Canfield fair with Angela (Vienna Leacock) away at college? Cooper Canfield (Elias Leacock) is still in school and likely to get into some trouble with Toby (Billy Christos, Jr.) so we’re sure they’ll have their hands full.
Will Mike (Ben Rosenbaum) and Mei (Amanda Wong) decide to start a family? And what of Henry (Martin Cummins)? He has a booming hazelnut business, but will he continue to serve as Lucas’ advisor?
Who is in the Season 13 of When Calls the Heart?

Erin Krakow (Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton)
Elizabeth continues to navigate single parenthood to Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich) after her husband’s tragic death. With Little Jack’s diabetes diagnosis, her parenting skills and faith will be tested, but we know she’s up for the task. She finally confessed her love for Mountie Nathan Gran,t and he reciprocated. The two are “Instagram official” as of Season 12.

Kevin McGarry (Nathan Grant)
Hope Valley’s Mountie, Nathan Grant, has charge of his niece, Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller), who is a precocious teen ready to stir up trouble. He eventually officially adopted Allie, who now calls him “Dad.”
Fun fact: Last year, McGarry married Kayla Wallace IRL. Wallace plays Fiona on the show.

Chris McNally (Lucas Bouchard)
The saloon owner is a world traveler but seems to have a few secrets in his past. After taking the governor’s seat, Lucas learned politics has a way of quashing any noble intentions he may have had going into the position. In Season 12, he came upon a worthy adversary in lawyer Edie Martell (Miranda MacDougall). Will the two rewrite the laws of love? You may recognize McNally from Altered Carbon or A Winter Princess.
Fun fact: McNally found his own Hallmark romance IRL with actress Julie Gonzalo. The two most recently starred together in 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost.

Jack Wagner (Bill Avery)
A former lawman and forensic investigator, Avery is now a judge for the town of Hope Valley. In the beginning, Avery seemed to not always be on the right side of the law but he has since mended his ways. In Season 12, we learned Bill still holds a torch for his old flame, Georgie McGill (Melissa Gilbert), a fellow forensic investigator.
Easily recognizable, Wagner has been on shows including Melrose Place and General Hospital.

Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith (Rosemary and Lee Coulter)
In the beginning, Rosemary LeVeaux was hated by fans when it appeared that she might be out to put a wedge in Elizabeth and Jack’s blossoming romance, but after she fell in love and married Lee Coulter, fans fell for her amusingly not-so-humble airs. Lee rode into town on a motorcycle and instantly took a shine to Rosemary and eventually married her. The successful businessman runs the town’s lumberyard as well as the newspaper with his wife.
The Coulters struggled with starting a family for several seasons, but finally became parents to Marigold “Goldie” Elizabeth Coulter in Season 10!

Amanda Wong and Ben Rosenbaum (Mike and Mei Suo Hickam)
Hickam is Hope Valley’s Everyman. He had a thing for Fiona (Kayla Wallace) in previous seasons, and in Season 10, he seemed to have a crush on Mei Suo (Amanda Wong). He kind of bumbled his way around the first few seasons, but now he’s proven himself to be a hard worker and businessman.
Fun fact: IRL, Rosenbaum has been in a long-term relationship with the show’s star, Erin Krakow!
Mei rode into town looking to escape a man who wished to possess her like a prized piece of jewelry. There was clearly a mutual attraction between her and Nathan in Season 9, but that seemed to fizzle out by the beginning of Season 10. She was then paired off with Mike Hickam (Ben Rosenbaum) but also possibly in a love triangle with Harry (Brendan McRae). By Season 11, it looked like Hickam was the only game in town (we’re not sure what happened to Harry), so the courtship continued between the two, and they were married by the season’s end.

Martin Cummins (Henry Gowan)
When Henry Gowan was first introduced to viewers, he was essentially the villain on the show, seemingly opting for profit over worker safety. Yet, over the course of the past twelve seasons, Gowan has taken a journey of redemption and is now one of the most beloved characters on the show. The person who hates him most is probably himself these days. His unrequited love for Abigail Stanton (Lori Louhglin) seems to have only strengthened over the last few seasons, much to the delight of #Henrigail shippers everywhere.
Cummins has been part of the cast of When Calls the Heart since Season 1. He was also a series regular on Riverdale. He has also appeared on Garage Sale Mysteries, Eureka, and UnREAL.

Hrothgar Matthews and Loretta Walsh (Ned and Florence Yost)
At the beginning of the series, Florence was left a widow (as were many others) after the mine collapse. She and Ned married in Season 8 after having known each other for years.

Andrea Brooks (Dr. Faith Carter)
After Dr. Carson Shepherd (Paul Greene) went to Boston to study with a famed doctor, Faith took over the infirmary and now serves as Hope Valley’s local physician. Early in Season 10, it appeared she and Nathan tried dating, but things didn’t work out between the two. She took over the care of Lily Watson (Chloe McKinnon) after her grandmother fell ill. Will there be romance for the doc in the upcoming season? We’ll have to tune in to find out!
Fun fact: Brooks was pregnant with her second child during the filming of Season 10 and her third child during the filming of Season 12!

Miranda MacDougall (Edie Martell)
Edie Martell was introduced in Season 12 as a foil for Gov. Bouchard, but also as a possible love interest. Working for the opposition, but realizing quickly their sinister agendas, Edie covertly helps Lucas with his causes. Hopefully, we’ll see more of her in the new season as their relationship evolves.
Viv Leacock, Natasha Burnett, Vienna Leacock, Elias Leacock (The Canfields: Minnie, Joseph, Angela, Cooper)
The Canfields came into town looking for a fresh start and bought an old property of Henry’s (Cummins) to lay down their roots. Their daughter, Angela, is a piano prodigy and also blind. She is headed off to college in the new season, so we probably won’t see much of her. Joseph, the Canfield patriarch, was originally looking to buy the gas station in town, but he’s also a handyman and preacher. His wife, Minnie, works at the cafe.
Not only are Angela and Cooper siblings on the show, but the actors are also the real-life children of Viv Leacock.

Johannah Newmarch (Molly Sullivan)
Molly is one of the town’s widows whose husband died in the mine collapse in Season 1. She’s best friends with Florence (Loretta Walsh) and a bit of a gossip hound. Molly’s daughter, Rosaleen (Mamie Laverock), returned to visit in Season 11, having spent several years away as a nanny. Molly seems to have a blossoming romance with Jed (Daniel Arnold), a Hope Valley local.

Jed Campbell (Daniel Arnold)
Jed Campbell looks to be Molly’s next love as his character has appeared more prominently this season. Many viewers thought the character was new to the show, but it turns out Arnold has been playing Jed since Season 3! Arnold’s other credits include Zoo, iZombie, and Hell on Wheels.

Hyland Goodrich (Jack Thornton Jr.)
Little Jack has had a rough time during Season 12. Not only did he start school but he also was diagnosed with diabetes, which was not only life-threatening at the time (and still is), but pretty much a death sentence back in the early 20th century.
Goodrich took over in Season 9 as Little Jack from Lincoln and Gunnar Taylor, the twins who were originally cast to play Baby Jack. The twins spent three seasons playing Elizabeth and Jack’s son. This is Hyland’s first role.
Fun fact: Insulin was invented by a Canadian surgeon, Dr. Frederick Banting, and medical student Charles Best. The two sold the patent for insulin to the University of Toronto for $1 so everyone could have access to it.

Jaeda Lily Miller (Allie Grant)
Allie is technically Nathan’s (McGarry) niece. But he has taken care of her since she was young after her mother (Nathan’s sister) died and her father left/was incarcerated. Nathan officially adopted Allie and she now calls him “Dad”.
Jaeda Lily Miller has been acting since she was a young child and has appeared in several Hallmark movies including A Cookie Cutter Christmas, The Christmas Secret, and Love Under the Stars..

Jacob Shoemay (Oliver Garrett)
Oliver is a Mountie cadet sent to Hope Valley to train under Nathan. While he had a difficult upbringing – his father died, his mother is in prison, and his foster family used him as labor for their farm – Oliver is determined to overcome these shortcomings to become a Mountie.

What happened to Fiona on When Calls on the Heart?
The character of Fiona, played by actress Kayla Wallace, was written out of Season 11. Fiona’s absence was explained in the beginning of the season. She had traveled to Nashville to visit her sisters and help with the Women’s Movement and decided to stay to continue with the efforts. She returned for Mei’s wedding at the end of Season 11.
She returns briefly in Season 12, but only to sell the barbershop. Fiona had decided to accept the proposal of a man who was always asking for her hand. While she did not feel romantic love for him, she knew it would be a good match, and it would allow her to pursue her charities and causes that she held so dear.
While she won’t be a series regular in Season 13, we may see Wallace appear as a guest star in an episode or two.
Wallace was cast in Landman, one of Taylor Sheridan‘s shows he produced for Paramount+. Landman stars Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, Demi Moore, and Andy Garcia. Wallace plays Rebecca Savage, a very capable and intimidating attorney sent to Texas to clean up a mess. The show was picked up for a second season by Paramount+.

When Calls the Heart is filmed just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. The town of Hope Valley is located on the Jamestown Movie Set (built on the family-owned MacInnes Farm), where most of the show is filmed.
