Spooky Adult Walking Tours

Walking tours aren’t only for tourists! They are also a fun way for adults to have fun, especially at Halloween. There are spooky tours in both Gastown and Stanley Park with Forbidden Vancouver. There are also Grave Tales walking tours in Fort Langley.

Forbidden Vancouver Walking Tours is a local family-owned company that offers a selection of guided walking tours throughout the year, including fabulously spooky ones in October. Small groups are guided through the streets and back alleys of downtown Vancouver, or along the Seawall and forested trails of Stanley Park, all depending on which tour you select. Forbidden Vancouver’s Lost Souls of Gastown tour makes for an exceptional Halloween-themed activity.

In addition to the above tours with Forbidden Vancouver, there is also an exceptional walking tour in Fort Langley. Hosted by the Fort Langley National Historic Site, the Grave Tales tours happen on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (as well as a couple Thursdays) between October 4th and 27th in 2024. There are also special youth edition tours on the Thursdays of October 17th and 24th. The adult tours are quite scary, hugely popular and sell out well in advance.

Haunted Houses at Halloween

There are dozens of great haunted houses in the region. Places that offer exceptional haunted experiences include Brinkworth Dungeon in Langley, Dreadworks Haunted House and Cougar Creek’s House of Horrors in Surrey, the Haunted Corn Maze at Maan Farms in Abbotsford, and Reaper’s Maze of Terror in Chilliwack.

In Vancouver there is Fright Nights at Playland, which features amusement rides, haunted houses, midway games and other entertainment.

FlyOver Canada isn’t a haunted house, but it’s a fun place to visit in its own right. The attraction offers an awesome family-friendly experience at Halloween. The HowlOver Canada film shows nearly every day of the month in October. (TIP: With this, on weekdays other than Fridays, if you select the Family Experience Package online you can get a free kid’s ticket with each paying adult ticket!) Canyon Frights at Capilano Suspension Bridge is also a family-friendly attraction, as well as a great romantic date destination. (And at the bridge attraction an annual pass is the same price as a single day ticket for residents of British Columbia.)

A few of the above are suitable for older children, and a couple are good for little kids too. Most, however, are best for older teens and young adults.

Click Lower Mainland Haunted Houses to learn about the above and other spooky places in Vancouver and the surrounding region during Halloween month in October. There are lots of them!

Halloween Adventure Games

Vancouver Mysteries offers games for groups of between two and six friends in downtown Vancouver. The games are like escape room challenges, but ones where everything is outside in the streets and on the sidewalks of the city. There’s also the Case of the Hotel Detective, which takes place inside the Delta Hotel Vancouver Downtown Suites on Thursdays and Saturdays.

You can play most of their games pretty much any time of the year. Between October 18th and 31st in 2024, however, the company offers Halloween Mystery Nights. That’s when teams can compete for prizes by playing Secret Mission, Crime in Downtown and Ghost Patrol. The Heroes & Villains game is also popular this time of year.

To learn more see the Vancouver Mysteries website.

Halloween Movies, Music and Theatre

There are a number of great films to see during the Halloween season, and a scary play too.

  • Vancouver Horror Show – the horror movie film festival takes place in 2024 from October 18th to 20th at Metrotown in Burnaby. It also happens the following weekend, from October 25th to 27th, at the Scotiabank Theatre in Vancouver.

  • Halloween Spooktacular Concert – spine-chilling music with the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra at the Sanctuary on 6th. Pieces performed include the Carpenter’s “Halloween Theme” and music from “Psycho”, the “Nightmare Before Christmas Medley”, “Phantom of the Opera” and more. (October 27th, 2024)
  • The Woman in Black – a scary play showing at the Metro Theatre in South Vancouver on select dates between October 12th and November 2nd in 2024. It’s like watching a horror movie or really freaky mystery, but it’s live theatre!
  • Die Fledermaus Opera – presented by Vancouver Opera, the opera by Johann Strauss II is at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. It’s not a “Halloween” show. It does involve costumes and a masquerade ball, however. It’s also comical and the most-performed operetta on the planet!

In addition to the above, there is also the family-friendly HowlOver Canada film which runs daily at FlyOver Canada in downtown Vancouver.

They aren’t films or theatre, but they are related to films and theatre, so you might also be interested in a couple of other events. There is Fancon HalloweenFest which is a pop culture tradeshow at BCIT in Burnaby on Sunday, October 20th. Expect to see lots of cosplay characters and merchandise from the science fiction, superhero and anime film industries at this event, plus even a few celebrities.  Later in the month, there is also Haunted Histories which is a special event hosted by the Vancouver Paranormal Society at Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver on Tuesday, October 29th.
