At , we’ve got our own idea of the best cities in the world for food. Our annual list is created based on feedback from locals, who rate their cities based on the quality and affordability of its food scene, which we then combine with the expertise of ’s on-the-ground writers and editors. But it turns out the World Culinary Awards have a pretty good idea about where’s great to eat, too. It’s all decided by a public vote, and the winners of this year’s awards – held in a glitzy ceremony in Dubai this week – have been announced. 

Claiming the coveted prize as the best culinary city destination on the planet was Hanoi, the bustling capital of Vietnam. Hanoi was also recently named the best city break destination in Asia by the World Travel Awards, so the city clearly has plenty of exciting things on the menu. 

Hanoi is known for dishes such as phở, a herby rice noodle dish served in a bowl of delicious broth, and bún chả, which are pork meatballs served with white rice noodles and Nước chấ (a sweet and spicy dipping sauce). 

Tummy rumbling? Same. It wasn’t an easy competition – Hanoi was competing with the likes of Auckland, Cape Town, Lima, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Montego Bay and Port Louis for the crown! You can read more about the finalists in other categories here
