Edmonton’s comedy and theatre community needs your support!

The Grindstone Theatre has been a staple in Edmonton since 2011. It initially started as a non-profit organization focused on supporting emerging artists, and, in 2018, it opened the Grindstone Comedy Theatre and Bistro, which acts as an intimate 78-seat theatre and licensed restaurant.

Each week, the Grindstone puts on shows like improv, stand-up, sketch comedy, musical theatre, and so much more. Even this past week on Monday, July 14, 2025, the Grindstone Theatre was just awarded two Sterling Awards for the first time.

Despite this, some of its artistic endeavours are struggling to make a profit.

“But Grindstone has never just been about ticket sales,” the organization says on its Instagram. “It’s been about uplifting artists, creating opportunities, making spaces accessible, dreaming, building & creating. It’s our productions, our venue, our bistro, our Theatre School — and the community of people who make and support it all, and the Comedy Theatre is the heart and home of all of it.”

Local laughs

Some of the Grindstone’s fun-filled evenings include Thursday Night Improv. Join the community for a night full of laughter caused by Edmonton’s best improvisers performing hilarious scenes completely unscripted. It’s guaranteed to be some of the sharpest comedy within the city.

Another favourite from the company is The 11 O’clock Number, Grindstone Theatre’s award-winning improvised musical comedy. The musical is based on suggestions from the audience, with an entire show improvised each Saturday night.

In addition to its regular scheduled shows, the Grindstone is hosting a fundraiser show. This two-hour event they’re throwing will include a silent auction, a 45-minute variety showcase, and a headlining set by the previously mentioned award-winning 11 O’clock Number cast.

The Grindstone is encouraging those who can to donate and become monthly donors, helping to support the growing arts community in Edmonton.

“Grindstone isn’t just a theatre,” reads its Instagram post. “It’s a vital part of Edmonton’s cultural fabric, a space for creation, education, play, and connection. If we lost the Comedy Theatre, we would lose more than a venue. We would lose a home for creative voices, local talent, and a big part of the future of our arts community in Edmonton.”
