Netflix has offered a first look at some of its Canadian original programming coming later this year.

The streamer hosted a special preview event for its broader 2025 slate earlier this week, followed by a showcase of Canadian productions from Netflix Canada directors of content Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury.

In total, we got a deep dive into three shows.

First up was North of North, a new comedy-drama series from CBC and Netflix.

Through the series, Indigenous creators Arnaquq-Baril and Aglok MacDonald (The Grizzlies) aim to offer a funny yet sincere look at modern Inuit life. Woodrow and Woodbury note that series like North of North are exactly the sort of “specific, relatable tales” that they look for when investing in Canadian content.

The series is currently streaming on CBC Gem and will air worldwide on Netflix starting this spring.

Following that, we got to see the first trailer for an untitled new documentary film that chronicles the controversial end of the Montreal Expos baseball team in 2004.

Several key players in the saga will be featured, including Expos vice president David Samson and player Vladimir Guerrero, as well as fans who felt “betrayed” by the team ultimately being relocated to Washington, D.C. as the Washington Nationals. Woodrow and Woodbury noted that Netflix users particularly like sports documentaries, making this one about an infamous Canadian story a no-brainer.

And finally, Netflix showed off Wayward, a new thriller series created by Toronto’s Mae Martin (Netflix’s acclaimed Feel Good series) and produced by Objective Fiction and Toronto-based Sphere Media.

Set in small-town Ontario in 2003, the series follows a cop and two troubled teens as they uncover a deeper conspiracy.

Martin, who identifies as non-binary, took the stage to talk about the series, saying it was inspired by their childhood friend who was sent to a U.S. rehab school before escaping and returning home.

In addition to drawing from stories recounted by their friend, Martin says they did a lot of research into those kinds of facilities, concluding that they were “the perfect framework to hang a thriller on.”

Wayward features an ensemble cast that includes veteran Toronto actors like Patrick J. Adams (Suits), Sarah Gadon (Alias Grace) and Martin alongside celebrated Australian actress Toni Collette (Hereditary).

None of the three titles have release dates beyond a general 2025 window. The news comes days after Netflix raised the price of all of its membership options in Canada.
