Our planet is brilliant, and whether you’re a cosmopolitan traveller on the hunt for a trendy, lesser-known city, or more of an adventurous type planning a trip off the beaten path, there are countless places to explore in all four corners of it.
However, to condense those down a little, TIME magazine has just published its list of the 100 greatest places on earth, calling on its international network of contributors to share their insight into the top places to stay and visit.
In that first category is HX Grand Greenland, a series of three new cruises that depart from the newly opened Nuuk Airport. They are the ‘Icy Giants of Disko Bay’, ‘Mythical Lands of the North’ and ‘Farthest North to Thule and Kane Basin’, and each journeys further towards the lesser-visited west coast of the island than any cruise ever before. Expect moody, dramatic landscapes and maybe even some polar bears.
Over in Australia, the Ghan – a railway now featuring a sleeper train that trundles all the way from Adelaide to Darwin past vast, kangaroo-filled deserts, crocodile-inhabited gorges and ancient Aboriginal sites – also made TIME’s roundup.
In the best places to visit category, Meza Malonga’s ‘Culinary Innovation Village’ in Rwanda got a shoutout, a 17-acre campus where the Congolese chef grows 134 vegetable and herb varieties and plans to educate diners about African flavours and offer apprenticeships to aspiring local chefs.
Then there’s the Flow Country, a 9,000-year-old amalgamation of plants and pools in northern Scotland that attracts migrating birds, sustains local herds of red deer and sequesters carbon from the atmosphere. It was even made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024 – you can read all about it here.
