Does it feel like you’re paying more for groceries? You’re not imagining it. But while some prices at Walmart Canada went up in the last year, some items actually got cheaper.

Canada’s Food Price Report (CFPR) had forecast that food prices would increase by 3 per cent to 5 per cent in 2025. The report states that an average Canadian family of four is expected to spend $16,833.67 on food this year — up $801.56 from 2024.

According to the report, Canadians are likely to see the most significant price increases in categories such as bakery, dairy, meat, restaurants and vegetables, up from 4 per cent to 6 per cent.

Meanwhile, wages can’t seem to keep up. The federal minimum wage is scheduled to increase by 45 cents on April 1 from $17.30/hour to $17.75 per/hour — a 2.4 per cent increase.

And this year, a U.S.-Canada trade dispute has resulted in uncertainty across several industries.

We wanted to see how prices in April 2024 compare to the current price of groceries, so we decided to go with prices available at a Walmart Canada location in Toronto. While some products did get more expensive and others stayed the same, prices did fall for certain grocery items.

Here’s how much Canadian shoppers are paying for groceries now compared to last year:

Prices for several items at Walmart Canada remained the same, such as certain potatoes, bananas, cheese, chicken, tuna and rice. In some cases, snacks and canned beans are slightly cheaper, while yogurt saw the biggest drop by almost a dollar compared to last year.

However, prices for other common grocery items increased, and this is not an exhaustive list of the store’s thousands of products.

Eggs and bread saw a slight increase, but something like Fuji apples will cost you significantly more, as each apple is now 20 cents more expensive than in 2024.
