Winter is here, and people in Calgary are feeling it after the heavy snowfall this weekend. All those in the city will want to make sure they shovel, or you might be facing a hefty fine. The city takes snow removal seriously, and people are expected to keep the sidewalks bordering their property clear.
The city website says that “in Calgary, keeping our sidewalks clear of snow is more than just a winter task; it’s a shared commitment to community safety. When Calgarians promptly remove snow, it ensures accessible pathways, smoother traffic, and a secure environment for everyone. This collective effort plays a vital role in maintaining the functionality and vibrancy of our city throughout the winter months.”
The bylaws around snow clearing say that property owners have to clear sidewalks within 24 hours post-snowfall. For property owners, this means that you’re responsible for clearing the sidewalk and/or pathway bordering your property.
While you can shovel snow off of public sidewalks onto other public spaces, you cannot shovel snow from a private property like your driveway onto a public space.
How much can you get fined for not shovelling your sidewalk in Calgary?
For breaking the snow clearing bylaws you can be fined $250 for the first offence, $500 for the second, and $750 for a third one within 12 months.
People who don’t shovel their sidewalks could also be invoiced for the clearing, which is a rate of $150 plus GST, minimum.
Make sure to remove snow and ice right down to the bare surface, from the sidewalks bordering your property, within 24 hours of the snowfall ending!
