  • Hungarian travelers have fallen victim to a scam on Booking.com, with losses amounting to HUF 177 million.
  • The fraudsters exploit the platform’s trust-based system by creating fake accommodation listings and manipulating payment processes.

As reported by Trade Magazin, Hungarian travelers have reportedly been scammed out of HUF 177 million (approximately $600,000) through fraudulent activities on Booking.com. The scammers exploit the platform’s trust-based system, creating non-existent accommodation listings and manipulating payments.

According to reports, fraudsters create fake accommodation profiles with attractive prices and images stolen from other legitimate listings. These profiles are designed to trick users into booking and paying for accommodations that do not exist. Once users book one of these fake accommodations, they receive an email from the “accommodation owner,” asking them to transfer money directly into a specific bank account as a deposit or full payment.

This payment method goes against Booking.com’s standard procedure, which typically involves direct payment at the property or via credit card through the platform. However, many users are unaware of this and proceed with the bank transfer as requested.

The police have already begun investigating these fraudulent activities. In response to this scam, Booking.com has stated that it is working hard to prevent such incidents from occurring again. They also urge users to be cautious when making bookings and payments online, advising them not to transfer money directly into bank accounts but instead follow their recommended payment procedures.

In addition, Booking.com has promised to refund customers who fell victim to these scams. The company is also strengthening its verification processes for new accommodation providers joining its platform.

This incident serves as a reminder for global online users about the importance of vigilance when making online transactions. It is crucial always to follow recommended procedures by trusted platforms and be wary of any unusual requests for direct bank transfers.
