The Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for his role in Frankensteinrecently revealed a promise he made to his mom, Melissa Elordi, more than a decade ago. And parents everywhere are rightfully jealous.
He may have played “The Creature,” but we think Jacob Elordi is more like “The Amazing Son.” Why? You carry your kiddo around for nine months, spend hours in childbirth, have countless sleepless nights, and spend all your time focused on making sure your little one has absolutely everything they need, all to…be their date at the Academy Awards?
Yes, that’s right. The Australian-born actor took his mom to the 98th Academy Awards after making a promise 13 years earlier. While fans might have expected the celeb to take on-again, off-again girlfriend influencer Olivia Jade or one of his famous co-stars (he starred in Wuthering Heights with Margot Robbie), Elordi walked the red carpet with a different woman—his mom.
In January, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Elordi revealed his Academy Award date plans to the late-night talk show host, “I’m going to take my mum.” He went on to explain, “I promised her when I was 15 that I would take her. So, I have to honor that.” And he certainly did!
Who is Melissa Elordi?
The Frankenstein actor doesn’t come from Hollywood royalty. Raised in Brisbane, Elordi is the child of John, a housepainter, and Melissa, a stay-at-home mom. He described Melissa in a 2022 interview with GQ as “the most present, loving, just beautiful, angelic human being on this planet.” And now for the collective, “Awwwww!”
Elordi also told Kimmel, “My mom, she fully believed in me the whole time. I remember dad did the dad thing at one point where he was like, ‘You’ve got to have a plan B because this isn’t necessarily feasible.” And I think I said something like, ‘My plan B is the Oscars.’”
Mom Melissa didn’t just believe in her son; she also got to deliver the amazing news about his Academy Award nomination. In the Kimmel interview, Elordi detailed how he got the ultra-important info, “I heard my mum’s phone ring at like 5 a.m., and then her little feet (pitter pattering) coming up the stairs, and then her face sort of told me that I’d been nominated.” And when Kimmel noted, “That’s good to get the news delivered by your mom,” the Oscar nominee quipped, “Much better than Twitter.”
Even though Elordi didn’t win his category (Sean Penn took the Oscar for his role in One Battle After Another), we’re pretty sure his “mum” couldn’t be more proud of her superstar son.
