Regardless of your feelings on Zack Snyder’s approach to the DC universe, we can all agree Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman was one of the best things to come from that series of films. Luckily, while Aquaman’s out, Momoa isn’t. The actor had made his return to James Gunn’s overhauled DCU as intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, who was seen all too briefly in the first Supergirl trailer. Now, in a new teaser (that sure looks like a Super Bowl-length TV spot), Lobo is ready for the spotlight. Somehow, Momoa looks as perfect a fit for Lobo as he did for Aquaman, making us wonder what other DC characters he’d be good for. (Jason Momoa is Booster Gold?)
In the teaser, Lobo arrives on his motorcycle seemingly just in time to save Supergirl (Milly Alcock), though she’s not too happy about it. Based on what little we see, Lobo is loud, brash, kills people with a massive hook, and smokes while driving through explosions — very irresponsible, if you ask us. He’s also impossibly cool.
Momoa was first announced for the role of Lobo back in December 2024, after fans and the actor himself spoke up about how perfect he’d be for the role. Even back when he was promoting 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, he lobbied for the role in an interview with Fandango.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,'” Momoa said. “If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
In a short social video he posted from the movie’s set, Momoa steps out of the makeup trailer, in costume and puffing on a cigar. When asked for his reaction to suiting up as Lobo, he offers an enthusiastic “Finally.” After seeing the character in action, we’re inclined to agree.
A synopsis for the film certainly implies that we’ll see a lot of Momoa’s Lobo in Supergirl: “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.” If that doesn’t make it sound like a Supergirl and Lobo buddy comedy in space, we don’t know what does.
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26.
