About the Position
This apprenticeship is made possible through the National Arts Centre’s Apprenticeship Program for Technical Production, Producing and Design.
To further its commitment to education and professional development, Vertigo Theatre is seeking to hire an Apprentice Technical Director. This is a mentorship position where the Apprentice Technical Director will be exposed to all the aspects of Technical Directing a professional production.
The Apprentice will shadow the Technical Director on the production of A Killing at La Cucina, and then have opportunities to step into leadership positions on the subsequent production, The DaVinci Code.
The mentorship will cover relevant skills including costing, budgeting, scheduling, construction drafting, crew management, rigging and structural safety, shop tools/safety, interdepartmental integration, and long-term planning. Other department-specific skills may be covered, but are not considered core competencies, such as: lighting, sound, video, wardrobe, and small props.
The successful candidate will be a motivated individual who has a keen interest in developing their skills in theatrical production and leadership. This position would be well suited to a recent graduate of a theatre school, or technicians who would like to learn more about how to run the technical side of theatre operations.
Qualifications
– Preference will be given to candidates who are interested in a career in Technical Direction, Production Management, or other organization and leadership positions within technical theatre.

– A diploma or degree in a technical area of production or equivalent experience is an asset, but not required.
– A natural collaborator with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
Hours
40 hours per week. Schedule to be set with the Technical Director based on the needs of the productions, which may include evenings and weekends. This position is subject to an averaging arrangement as per Alberta Labour Code.
Dates
12 week contract from March 3rd to May 12, 2025
Compensation
$800.00 per week plus 4% Vacation Pay
