Trickster Theatre will be holding general auditions for local actors on various dates between April and June 2025.
These auditions are for artists who would like to work in our week-long residency program. In this program, which takes place in schools, artists produce, direct, write and act in shows created with classes. Each artist is responsible for creating 3 short 5 minute pieces of theatre per week. Contracts are for multiple week-long projects. Each school chooses their own theme to base the show on.
Our style is physical theatre. We work with class sets of props to tell the story. Artists use a combination of movement, improvisation, and dialogue along with using everyday items such as bamboo poles, pool noodles, pvc pipes, tablecloths, etc to create original plays each week. Artists are involved in every aspect of the production and will learn how to integrate sound, lights, and tech cues into all of their pieces and become familiar with how to set up and run a touring theatre rig.
In this program, we put a team of artists in a school to co-create an original show with up to 600 student actors in one week. Trickster provides all of the curtains, lights, props, sound, & costumes as the school gymnasium is transformed into a live theatre with all of the students performing in the final show. We do these projects all over Alberta.
Trickster Theatre is one of the largest TYA companies in Canada and does approximately 50 week-long residencies per year.
Both Equity and non-Equity actors are invited to audition. Starting artist fees range from equity rates for TYA to rates about 30% higher than equity. Trickster Theatre is not an equity company.
The auditions will take place in a school, working with students to create a short piece with assigned physical vocabulary and movement patterns.
Artists with physical theatre, dance, clown, mime or improv experience are encouraged to apply. We are looking for artists that are strong performers, writers and choreographers. Experience working with children and youth is an asset.
Artists are invited to apply for an audition by emailing a copy of your resume and headshot to production@trickstertheatre.com. Please include Trickster General Auditions in the subject line; we will email then set up a video meeting as a first step. No phone calls please.
