Given her body of work, you’d think Kate Winslet’s family members would have a healthy fear of pandemics, losing their memory, or large boats making transatlantic voyages.

But, as the Oscar winner detailed during a recent interview, her husband suffers from a more unexpected fear.

Winslet stopped by The Late Show to speak with Stephen Colbert on the Jan. 16 episode, where the two got onto the topic of phobias after the veteran television host asked her if she prefers apples or oranges.

“Apples,” Winslet said with certainty, before couching her statement. “However, Ned’s going to be so cross with me,” she noted, referencing her husband of 12 years, Edward Abel Smith.

“So my husband. You know how people have phobias of like, balloons or clowns, and you know, strange things?” she asked. “My husband has, you know, like nails down a chalkboard or squeaky polystyrene? My husband has that about a person biting into an apple.”

Colbert then asked for clarification on whether the phobia has to do with someone else biting into an apple, or if it gets triggered when he bites into an apple.

“Someone else or him, but he would never bite into an apple. In fact, if he was here, he’d go ‘ahh!’ and his hairs would be all up on his arm. Oh God, he’s going to kill me for telling this story,” Winslet shared.

Colbert once again had follow-up questions, primarily if Smith is bothered by whole apples only, or if sliced apples are also off the table. “A sliced apple, even a grated one, is a challenge. And, as you can imagine, the children and I, I’m afraid, we will go up behind him,” said Winslet, and mimed taking a large bite out of an apple.

“It’s like you’ve poured hot water over his skull. Honestly, he is in proper pain and will block his ears and leave the room. Poor little Neddy,” Winslet concluded.
