KPop Demon Hunters has been on a tear since it debuted on Netflix in June, topping the music charts and becoming a legit pop culture phenomenon. Now, in just a few short months, it’s officially become the most watched Netflix Original of all time. Netflix officially announced the news on social media, declaring, “THIS ONE’S FOR THE HONMOON.”
KPop Demon Hunters’ final challenge was to surpass Red Notice, the 2021 heist movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, the previously most-watched record holder, with more than 200,000,000 cumulative views on Netflix. As of this writing, KPop Demon Hunters has surpassed 236 million views.
It’s been obvious for a few weeks now that Sony’s animated musical about a K-Pop demon-slaying band was destined to conquer Netflix. KPop Demon Hunters has generated an overwhelming amount of fan fiction, while its fictional K-pop group has a very real song at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making HUNTR/X the first female trio to top the list since Destiny’s Child. Netflix is also reportedly moving forward with both sequels and live-action adaptations. Netflix and Sony apparently see the movie as their own Frozen, which means you can expect to see plenty more of its main characters in the future.
All that said, it’s still great to see an original animated film not rely on A-list celebrities — no offense to Ken Jeong — or previously established IP climb the charts at Netflix. Hopefully, this means the streamer keeps investing in new ideas, while also making plenty of KPop Demon Hunters sequels, of course.
