It’s hard to imagine Sex and the City without the core four (Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte), but in an alternate universe, Charlotte might have been a recurring character only—and Kristin Davis, who plays her, might not have the enormous net worth that she does today.

In her new podcast, “Are You a Charlotte?,” Davis shares the story, recalling how she got what appeared to be a downgraded contract delivered to her trailer while she was shooting the pilot, despite starting out with what she calls a “big, thick, 7-year deal.”

“I take the paperwork and I look at it and it seems to be a new contract, but it’s only two pages long. And I’m like, ‘What is this?'” she remembers. She went on to reveal that the document said she’d be a “recurring” character and that she would be paid just $5,000, presumably per episode, for the role. “I was like, What?” she said.

Davis called her lawyer and he told her not to sign the document. “I was like, Oh God, Oh Jesus. What are they trying to do to me? What’s happening?” Davis recalls thinking. “I was so stressed. And then I was just like, ‘I’m just not going to mention this to anyone else. I’m just going to pretend like everything’s fine.’ But inside I was really nervous about it.”

Needless to say, Davis wound up playing much more than a recurring character, and she eventually got the paychecks to prove it.

How did Kristin Davis get her start?

Davis started doing theater as a kid in South Carolina, then moved to New Jersey to study acting at Rutgers University. She graduated in 1987, and went on to have the quintessential New York acting experience: working as a waitress while booking TV gigs. Her first substantial job arrived in 1989, when she landed a role on General Hospital

She followed that up with an episode of The Larry Sanders Show, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and ER, then landed what would turn out to be a 32-episode arc on the hit TV series Melrose Place, starting in the show’s third season. Although her character was killed off by Season 4, the role wound up being a life-changing one for Davis, as it introduced her to Melrose Place creator Darren Star, who later tapped her for his soon-to-be iconic show Sex and the City

And just like that, Kristin Davis was a star.
