A Man Called Otto
Tom Hanks plays against type as a gravelly-voiced old grouch who just wants to be left alone long enough to hang himself and join his wife in the afterlife. Of course, his meddling neighbours won’t allow that to happen, and the movie becomes just the sort of hard-to-resist heartstring-tugger you expect to see Tom Hanks in.

Edge of Tomorrow
‘Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day’ is the easiest pitch for this entertaining sci-fi blockbuster. Tom Cruise is a post-apocalyptic bureaucrat conscripted to fight against the alien hordes that have taken over the planet. The twist? He soon discovers he has the ability to regenerate, video game style, every time he dies – and he dies a lot. It was oddly underseen, given the concept and personnel, which also includes Emily Blunt as a tough-edged army sergeant, but remains heaps of fun.

First Man
Ryan Gosling excels at playing quiet brooders, so he was the ideal choice to portray astronaut Neil Armstrong, a man who uttered one of the most famous quotes in human history but otherwise had little use for words. With director Damien Chazelle, the two attempt to pry the person out from behind the American icon, resulting in a uniquely rewarding biopic.

Evil Dead Rise
Picking up the mantle from Fede Álvarez a decade prior, director Lee Cronin re-reboot’s Sam Raimi’s ‘80s splatstick landmark, removing much of the comedy but cranking up the splat. About the only narrative difference from the previous instalments is the location – a condemned apartment complex in LA as opposed to a cabin in the woods – but the heaps of gore and terrifying atmosphere should keep fans of the franchise more than satisfied.

Point Break
You really should own Kathryn Bigelow’s action classic on every form of physical media that exists – DVD, VHS, LaserDisc, kinetoscope – or have it committed to memory so that it plays whenever you close your eyes. But if you’ve somehow never experienced the thrill of Keanu Reeves chasing Patrick Swayze through the back-alleys of LA, or the tender romance of their starlit beach football game, here’s your last chance to dance, squid-brain.

Glengarry Glen Ross
If you miss Succession, David Mamet’s all-star adaptation of his own stage play should scratch your itch for creative swearing and heinous white-collar careerists stabbing each other in the back. Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon and Ed Harris are all fantastic, while Alec Baldwin gives the most memorable film performance of his career in the span of a ten-minute cameo.
