How does Lotto Max work?
Lotto Max is one of the biggest lottery games in Canada, with draws happening every week on Tuesdays and Fridays.
For each $5 play, you get three sets of seven numbers, which can range anywhere from 1 to 50.
To win a prize, you’ll need to match anywhere from three to seven numbers in one set with the drawn numbers. Some prize categories also use a bonus number, which is drawn alongside the regular numbers.
The prize amounts depend on ticket sales and are divided among the winners in each prize category. Here’s a typical payout for matching numbers:
- 7/7 (jackpot) — an average of $47.5 million
- 6/7 plus bonus — an average of $194,405
- 6/7 — an average of $4,629
- 5/7 plus bonus — an average of $926
- 5/7 — an average of $105
- 4/7 plus bonus — an average of $50
- 4/7 — $20 fixed prize
- 3/7 plus bonus — $20 fixed prize
- 3/7 — free play
The Lotto Max jackpot starts at $10 million and can grow to a maximum of $80 million if it’s not won. Once the jackpot hits $50 million, Maxmillions come into play — additional $1 million prizes that can be won.
All three sets of numbers from your $5 ticket are entered into the main draw, and if there are Maxmillions prizes, they’ll be in that too. To take home a Maxmillions prize, all seven numbers in a set must match.
You can buy tickets right up until 10:30 p.m. ET on the day of the draw.
The odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 33,294,800, although your chances of winning any prize are around 1 in 7.
Good luck, Canada!
