Magic: The Gathering’s latest set, Marvel Super Heroes, is just weeks away, and on Tuesday, Wizards of the Coast unveiled a bunch of new cards from the upcoming Universe Beyond expansion. From 600 new cards to the contents of its four Commander decks, it’s a colossal set (and it’s coming to Magic: The Gathering Arena). As far as valuable variants, though, Marvel Super Heroes is borrowing liberally from last year’s Final Fantasy set.

Alongside the likes of comic-book cover art treatments and the return of Source Material prints, we’re getting some Borderless Logo treatments. We got our first glimpse at some, with Doctor Doom, Thanos, The Mad Titan, and Wolverine, Fierce Fighter all appearing in beautiful Magic card variants that show the character against a monocolored background with their name printed behind them.

At a press preview event, Magic’s head designer, Mark Rosewater, explained the thinking behind these cards.

“One of the things that Marvel does is every single major hero or villain has an iconic logo that they have,” Rosewater said. “And whenever you see them, it’s always the same logo, and there’s a lot of brand identity in the logos. And so it’s really fun for us to get to interact with the character with the logos.”

The result is pretty cool, but it’s not exactly a new idea. Magic fans may remember that when Final Fantasy arrived in 2025, Wizards offered similar variants for the most popular characters. In lieu of characters having their own logos, these cards featured roman numerals to highlight which game the relevant character was from. This led to some of the best-looking borderless cards we’ve seen in recent years, so it’s cool to see Wizards of the Coast go back to the same idea in a uniquely Marvel way.

Wizards didn’t see exactly how many of these new borderless Marvel Super Heroes cards the set will feature or which other heroes will get the spotlight. However, it seems safe to assume that the core Avengers will all get a similar spotlight, along with other iconic villains like Loki. With more reveals coming all week, we should learn a lot more soon.
