If you’ve seen Amanda Seyfried sing Joni Mitchell before, you know how these videos usually go.

This one doesn’t end that way.

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Mamma Mia! star posted a video to Instagram of herself singing Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” Within seconds, someone in a Ghostface mask creeps up behind her.

‘I Want to Hear the Rest of the Song’

She catches it out of the corner of her eye and screams. That’s the end of the song.

She didn’t add a caption. Her fans filled in the rest.

“Not at any moment did I predict where this was going to go,” one wrote. Another just wanted the song back: “I want to hear the rest of the song!”

Just a few hours after posting, the video had more than 54,000 likes.

She Learned Every Song on ‘Blue’

“A Case of You” is on Blue, Mitchell’s 1971 album, and Seyfried knows that record front to back.

She learned all of it during the pandemic, switching between piano, guitar and dulcimer, while preparing to play Mitchell in a biopic about the singer and her manager, Elliot Roberts, she told GQ this summer. The movie never got made.

Finishing the album’s last song, “The Last Time I Saw Richard,” made her feel “like a bona fide musician, like I belong here,” she said.

She also had a steak dinner with Mitchell at her Los Angeles home, where Mitchell put on Blue for her. “After we listened to the album, she’s like, ‘It’s sparse, isn’t it?'” Seyfried recalled.

Her ‘California’ Cover Went Viral First

That one aired in March 2025, when she played “California” on the dulcimer on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Fans started demanding a biopic almost immediately.

Jimmy Fallon later called it “one of the most viral videos that ever went out of our show in the history of our show.”

Cameron Crowe is reportedly making a different Joni Mitchell biopic, without her.

Ghostface Is Turning 30

The original Scream turns 30 in December.

Seyfried hasn’t said who was under the mask.
