While it seems cliché to say that celebrities are just like us, there are some moments when we’re reminded of the fact that regular ol’ people like you and me have some things in common with our favorite stars.

For example, it’s only human to have favorite foods, even if you’re an A-list star like Mariska Hargitay. Juggling her 26-year run as Detective Olivia Benson on Law and Order: SVU, her advocacy work to improve societal views on sexual violence and her documentary filmmaking projects means that she is one busy woman. And it turns out the actress, philanthropist, producer and director is interested in eating foods that taste really good but also leave her feeling good enough to keep up with her busy schedule. We can relate!

According to an interview with First magazine, Hargitay’s favorite snack is watermelon made in a specific but simple way. “My favorite snack is a watermelon salad with cucumber, feta cheese, mint, and a citrusy dressing,” Hargitay shared with First. “I have it at least three times a week. It’s super hydrating and makes me feel like I’m getting a treat.”

Why Watermelon Salad is the Perfect Summer Snack

This time of year, we’re craving fresh, cool, easy foods, and watermelon salad checks all of those boxes. The juicy watermelon paired with fresh, crunchy cucumbers is nice and light and Hargitay’s classic feta addition gives the salad a little substance and adds a creamy, tangy element.

We also love that she tosses some fresh mint into the mix. The bright herb pairs well with both watermelon and cucumbers. While Hargitay didn’t specify how the citrus dressing was made, if it were up to us, we would toss the watermelon salad in a simple vinaigrette made with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, olive oil and some salt and pepper. It’s summertime, so the cooking should be easy!

Hargitay isn’t the only celebrity who signs off on watermelon salads. Kate Middleton is a fan of the summery dish and Chrissy Teigen also has her own take on watermelon salad that takes its flavor cues from her Thai heritage.

And watermelon salad isn’t the only fresh fruit-based snack Hargitay loves. She’s also a fan of apples paired with almond butter. As she told NBC, the combination is “sweet, but there is protein.” When she truly wants to live a little, Hargitay told NBC that her “decadent snack is really good pears with truffle cheese. Oh, and edamame.” (We’ll be keeping the pear combo in mind for our fall cheese plates.)
