What Is Martha Stewart’s Famous Eggnog?
“I can’t image a Christmas without my very favorite eggnog,” she says at the start of the video. “It’s truly a family tradition.” The vintage video shows Martha in a dark wood kitchen (or a kitchen set) wearing a burgundy sweater with a white shirt underneath. Two giant bowls are in front of her for the recipe demo.
The video shows Martha making the recipe, but her delivery, which is coy and knowing, especially as she pours in all the booze, has connected with people like only Martha can.
The recipe itself is pretty simple. You need eggs, milk, superfine sugar, cream, freshly grated nutmeg, plus a generous helping of three types of liquor—dark rum, cognac and bourbon. It’s indulgent, rich and packs a punch.
How Do You Make Martha Stewart’s Famous Eggnog?
You can get the full recipe and the process to make it on Martha’s website, but the gist is you beat superfine sugar into egg yolks, then whisk in whole milk and heavy cream. And this is when things get interesting. You add in 3 cups (not a typo!) of bourbon, 1/2 cup of dark rum and 2 cups of Cognac. “The good Cognac,” Martha reminds us.
Just before serving, you beat the egg whites and “gently immerse them” in the egg yolk mixture. “This gives a lot of fluff and volume,” says Martha. But she’s not done yet. She whips lightly sweetened whipped cream before pouring the egg nog base into a “big, beautiful punch bowl.” She dollops the whipped cream on top and finishes the drink with some freshly grated nutmeg.
As she signs off with a small glass of the drink in her hand, she says, “Remember, one per person,” with a sly smile.
NOTE: If you’re not comfortable eating raw eggs, you can make this recipe with pasteurized eggs.
