Martha Stewart made quite the claim about the relationship she had with her now ex-husband in her recently released documentary, leading him and his current wife to feel like they needed to address a few things.
In case you missed it, in the 83-year-old lifestyle mogul’s tell-all Netflix film, which hit the streamer Wednesday, Oct. 30, Martha claimed that Andrew Stewart–to whom she was married from 1961 until 1990–cheated on her with “many different girlfriends.” Martha proceeded to warn young women, “If you’re married and you think you’re happily married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s––t.”
In a statement signed by Andrew and his current wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart, shared on Facebook shortly before the premiere of Martha, the couple prefaced the post by saying this would be their “first” and “only public comment on this subject.”

“No one was more surprised than we when, after being introduced as colleagues almost 12 years ago, our connection blossomed into a deep and everlasting love,” Shyla wrote in the Oct. 12 post, adding that with “our families at the center, Andy and I have built a life of beauty, meaning, productivity, and purpose, infused with true love, which we share as fully as we can with our beautiful blended family of 5 amazing adult children, our 3 adorable grandchildren, our extended family, and many cherished friends.”
“Prior to this happy chapter of his life, Andy had some dark ones, including a painful and abusive marriage to Martha (as in, Martha Stewart),” the post alleged, noting his relationship with the TV personality ended “almost 40 years ago.”
“While Andy quietly moved on and forward with his life, it appears that Martha continues to publicly relitigate the marriage, including comments in a sensationalized trailer for an upcoming documentary on Netflix. The juxtaposition of Andy’s early life with the joy-filled, purpose-led, loving marriage we live today is striking. Every day, we openly express our gratitude for our love and for our life together,” the post continued, concluding with a message for the Martha Living namesake: “We both wish everyone, including Martha herself, the experience of loving and being loved deeply and fully, and the peace that comes from such a love.”
The upload also included pictures of Shyla and Andrew over the years, enjoying time with loved ones and one another.
Martha and Andrew were married for about 25 years before they separated in 1987 and ultimately divorced three years later. The two welcomed a daughter, Alexis, in the early years of their marriage.
After their divorce was finalized in 1990, Andrew married Martha’s assistant, Robyn Fairclough. The two eventually called it quits, and in 2016, Andrew married Shyla, according to her Facebook page.
