Before becoming Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, Iman Vellani was a teenager with no acting credits who took a chance on an open casting call. The role launched her into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and led to her latest project, Chachu, a neo-noir private investigator comic centred on a 19-year-old South Asian girl.

Despite her global success, Vellani remains closely connected to home. In a recent interview with Streets of Toronto, she praised Markham as home to some of the best Asian food in the country. Here are four of her favourite local spots.

1. Yin Ji Chang Fen

Located right across from Markville Mall, this spot gets a prime recommendation from Vellani for its incredible Cantonese comfort food. She highlights it as an amazing place to grab authentic rice noodle rolls.

2. Cafe Bon Bon

If you have a sweet tooth, this spot is a must-try. Vellani notes that while Cafe Bon Bon is relatively new to the area, it has already won her over with its standout, cloud-like soufflé pancakes.

3. Northern Dumpling Kitchen

Vellani keeps it short and sweet when it comes to this local staple: she simply loves Northern Dumpling Kitchen. It remains a personal favourite for delicious, comforting northern-style Chinese dishes.

4. Go Place Spa

For an all-day reset, Vellani heads here. While she points out that it sits in one of the most hectic plazas around, stepping inside offers complete relaxation. For around $70, you can stay as long as you want, explore various saunas and specialty rooms, read a book and eat at the on-site restaurants.
