We’re back, baby!

Marvel Animation revealed the first trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 on Wednesday, confirming a July 1 release date for the Disney Plus streaming series based on Marvel’s merry mutants.

But things don’t look so cheery in season 2 of the celebrated X-Men animated series, with the team scattered through time and the threat of Apocalypse looming both in the past and the future. The goal, according to time-traveling mutant Bishop? Get the X-Men back to their rightful place: the 1990s!

The first season of X-Men ’97 which premiered in 2024, left off on a characteristic cliffhanger, with many of the X-Men severely injured, dead (but maybe about to be resurrected?), or lost in the far future and ancient Egyptian past. The new footage shows X-Men throughout various time periods, including heavily featured folks like Rogue, Polaris, and Rachel Summers. Oh, and there’s just a little bit of Deadpool in the new trailer for X-Men ’97. His ol’ pal Wolverine is here too, back and better than ever.

While the wait for the second season has felt long, there’s more to look forward to in the future: Season 3 of X-Men ’97 is already in production, with Marvel’s What If…? writer Matthew Chauncey hired to replace head writer Beau DeMayo. The show’s full voice cast is expected to return, with some fun additions like Gates McFadden (Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Mother Askani and Adetokumboh M’Cormack (Castlevania) as En Sabah Nur.
