MEININGER Hotels continues its expansion in its home market of Germany. The opening of a new hotel is planned in the iconic new KoolKiel building, a project by ADORE Group

A new MEININGER Hotel is planned in KoolKiel, a multifunctional new building in the capital of northern Germany, Kiel. The opening is scheduled for 2027.

Spread across 12 floors, the hotel chain will offer 177 rooms, comprising double rooms as well as triple, quadruple, and even six-bed rooms.

Kiel, and especially the site of the planned KoolKiel complex, is also notable for being the birthplace of the WERNER comics in the 1970s, which went on to become a remarkable success story in Germany.

Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, explains: “We are excited to add Kiel to our MEININGER Hotels portfolio. The city combines maritime tradition, vibrant culture, and growing tourism potential. With its ideal location and mix of history and nature, Kiel fits perfectly with our hybrid hotel concept, which appeals to both adventurers and families.”

Sustainability in focus

Menon highlights the fact that KoolKiel is being built according to the latest sustainable standards, including the use of CO2-neutral hydrogen technology, as particularly positive. “At MEININGER, we integrate sustainability into our core business. We are working on improving our processes, products, and services, with a focus on waste management, biodiversity, reducing CO2 emissions, diversity, and inclusion. This also includes choosing the most sustainable construction options for our new properties – which is the case with KoolKiel,” he explains.

Collaboration with the ADORE Group

The Berlin-based ADORE Group, the developer behind the KoolKiel project, is enthusiastic about the partnership with MEININGER Hotels. “The partnership with MEININGER Hotels is an important milestone for the KoolKiel project. MEININGER’s innovative and hybrid hotel concept fits perfectly with our vision of a sustainable, urban living space. We are excited to collaborate with a forward-thinking partner who shares our values regarding sustainability and modern urban development,” said Markus Aluta, CEO of the ADORE Group.

Maritime charm and a lively old town

Kiel is a city with maritime flair and breathtaking coastal landscapes, featuring fascinating museums and cozy waterfront restaurants. Water sports enthusiasts will find their paradise here, while Kiel Week attracts visitors from all over the world. Shopping fans will be delighted by the boutiques in the old town. Offering the perfect mix of adventure, city life, and relaxation, Kiel is an ideal destination for a city trip. This is backed by official tourism statistics, which confirm that Kiel continues to excel as a city break destination in the leisure tourism sector. In the past ten years, the number of overnight stays in the state capital increased by an impressive 76.1 percent, reaching over 700,000 in 2023*. “Kiel has something to offer for every target group – just like MEININGER Hotels. Families, couples, backpackers, school groups, friends, and business travelers all feel equally at home with us, thanks to our hybrid concept that combines the best of a hostel and a hotel,” said Ajit Menon regarding the choice of location.

Following openings in Venice, Cologne, and Krakow in 2023, and with planned openings in Barcelona and Edinburgh, MEININGER Hotels announces its next step in expansion with the newly planned hotel in Kiel. To ensure sustainable growth, MEININGER focuses on handling each opening with care, rather than pushing for mass rollouts. This proven and successful hybrid hotel concept is gradually being expanded into new markets and major cities, with a focus on Europe.
