Metro grocery workers in Toronto could strike tonight

Negotiations continue between Metro Supermarket and its approximately 3,700 employees, with Metro Supermarket workers in the Toronto metropolitan area preparing to strike as early as tonight.

Workers at 27 Metro stores in the GTA could go on strike as early as 11:59pm on Tuesday.

Uniform, the national trade union representing metro workers, called for a strike vote before negotiations began, garnering 100 percent support for employment action if no deal is reached.

The union said it had made progress since negotiations began on June 26, but that key issues of wages, benefits and other financial matters remained unresolved.

Unifor National President Lana Payne said the bargaining committee was ready to negotiate day and night to get a fair deal for workers.

She said Metro employees are entitled to agreements that address affordability challenges and allow employees to benefit from the company’s profits.
