Blizzard has properly unveiled World of Warcraft‘s 11th expansion, Midnight, during Gamescom Opening Night Live in its traditional fashion: with a typically gorgeous cinematic trailer.

The trailer sets WoW players up for a return to Quel’Thalas, home of the Blood Elves. Quel’Thalas first featured in the game’s very first expansion The Burning Crusade, albeit as a Horde-only starting area and capital city, plus the Sunwell raid. Now the forces of the Void have invaded with the intention of capturing the Sunwell, a powerful font of magical energy. As Midnight draws near, Xal’atath’s ravenous void armies descend upon Silvermoon, threatening to envelop all of Azeroth in eternal darkness.

Midnight is the second part of the Wordsoul Saga, a trilogy of expansions masterminded by returning Blizzard veteran and originator of the Warcraft universe, Chris Metzen. First installment The War Within launched in August 2024 and went down pretty well with critics and players.

Blizzard will be diving deep on Midnight at Gamescom over the next few days, with developer panels covering the locations, lore, and new gameplay features, as well as a hands-on demo of the long-awaited and previously announced player housing feature. The developer panels will be available to watch online after they’ve taken place, and there will even be a cosplay contest. It’s like a mini-BlizzCon!

World of Warcraft: Midnight is coming in 2026.
