The family of Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner will be growing by one in the coming months.

Gaby McCabe, wife of Leafs defenceman Jake, shared the news on her Instagram story over the weekend, complete with what appeared to be a few party favours from a baby shower.

“Oh boy! Welcome Baby Marner. Love your Lady Leafs,” a card in the photo posted by Mrs. McCabe read, suggesting a baby shower was held by the Leafs wives and girlfriends. It’s also likely a safe assumption that the child will be a boy.

The new baby is the Marners’ first.

The couple will be the second high-profile Leafs pairing to have a baby on the way in recent months, with Morgan Rielly’s wife, Tessa Virtue, giving birth to a baby boy named McCormick in August 2024.

The Marners first met in elementary school but then reconnected and began dating during Mitch’s junior hockey career with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights while Steph attended the University of Western Ontario.

The pair was engaged in 2021 before eventually tying the knot in 2023.

Marner has spent his entire professional career in Toronto since being drafted by the franchise at fourth overall in 2015. Over that timeframe, he’s been the Leafs’ leading scorer, putting up 710 points in 632 games for the franchise.

It’s been quite a busy few weeks for Marner. Representing Canada on the international stage at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, the 27-year-old scored an overtime goal to seal a win over Sweden in his country’s opening game before setting up Connor McDavid for the tournament-winning goal last Thursday night against the United States of America.

With the playoffs less than two months away for Marner and the Leafs, he can only hope he’ll be able to summon some of that new dad strength in order to help kickstart a deep postseason run.
