Transformers One brought plenty of horsepower to theaters this weekend. But when it came to claiming the box office’s checkered flag, it didn’t have enough juice.

For the third straight weekend, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice topped all comers to earn the North American box-office crown. The ooky PG-13 horror comedy gathered up $26 million to narrowly top Transformers One. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has now earned $226.8 million stateside, which makes it the year’s sixth highest-grossing (and I do mean grossing) film. Add in the $103 million the flick has earned overseas, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has shoveled in $329.8 million.

This was supposed to be the weekend of Transformers One. With an 89% “freshness” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a $1.6 billion franchise behind it, most prognosticators assumed that the young Optimus Prime et al would take the title. The $25 million Transformers One earned just wasn’t quite enough to claim the title, but the accountants at Paramount hope that this film will have legs. Er, wheels.

Compared to that one-two punch, every other movie out was a comparative afterthought. Speak No Evil proved to be the best of the rest. It finished third with $5.9 million. Newcomer Never Let Go roped in fourth place with a $4.5 million weekend. And Deadpool & Wolverine remained in the top five with $3.9 million.

That kept The Substance—one of the year’s strangest films—out of the top five. It finished sixth with $3.1 million.
