It’s not even Thanksgiving yet. But at the local multiplex, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas—albeit a Christmas with a bit of coal.
Red One, wherein Santa Claus himself is kidnapped, went to the top of the box office, unwrapping $34 million worth of North American Christmas cheer. It collected another $50 million overseas, pushing its global total to $84.1 million.
That sounds like a lot of money to find under the cinematic Christmas tree. Still, most experts would say that’s a bit of a disappointing debut for St. Nick and company. Given that Amazon MGM reportedly spent $250 million to make the thing, Red One will need to earn a lot more green to land in the black.
After three weeks at the top of the box office, Venom: The Last Dance waltzed down to second place. It slurped up another $7.4 million en route to its silver medal finish, pushing its overall domestic tally to $127.6 million.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever added to the box office’s Christmas spirit, holding onto third place with a $5.4 million weekend. That pushes the film to $20 million after two weeks. Oh, and did we mention that it’s holding a 91% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Seems like I wasn’t the only reviewer who liked this movie.
After finishing second last weekend, Heretic tumbled to fourth place, banking less than $5.2 million. That gives the film a grand total of $20.4 million in North America.
For the eighth straight weekend, The Wild Robot managed to find a slot in the weekend’s top five. It banked $4.3 million, which brought its total domestic tally to a very impressive $137.8 million. Add the $170.7 million the film has earned overseas, and The Wild Robot’s total take stands at $308.5 million.
