Givens sought help from bariatric surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan (known as Dr. Now) in Houston, Texas. But was he able to change his ways and qualify for weight-loss surgery?

Cillas Givens was featured on My 600-Lb Life Season 7, Episode 17.

In My 600-Lb Life, Givens explained that his emotional eating and overeating habits began as a child. He was over 300 pounds by the time he was 13, and his weight continued to climb from there.

For his first weigh-in with Dr. Now, a team of medics had to help load Givens into a vehicle. He tipped the scales at 729 pounds and had multiple infections. Givens was admitted to a hospital in an attempt to gain control of his dire health situation.

“I’m very concerned if we send you home, you won’t survive long,” Dr. Now told him. “So we’re going to need to keep you here in the hospital on a controlled diet.”

The plan was to kick-start Givens’ weight loss and then send him to a rehab facility to get him walking again. He lost 138 pounds in one month at the hospital.

At the rehab center, Givens’ mobility gradually increased as his weight continued to drop. He weighed 518 pounds after another month.

After he was sent home, Givens’ progress stalled out for a bit. He only lost 5 pounds over the next two months. However, Givens dropped 51 pounds at his next follow-up appointment two months after that. Dr. Now then approved him for weight loss surgery.

Eight months into his journey, Givens weighed 404 pounds—down a total of 325 pounds. At a follow-up, he then tipped the scale at 371 pounds.

“I just wanted to say thank you,” he told Dr. Now. “You’ve not only changed my life but my whole family’s too.”

At the end of the episode, Givens weighed 345 pounds; he then proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Jessica, and she happily accepted the marriage proposal.

Cillas Givens’ journey was revisited in My 600-Lb Life: Where Are They Now?

My 600-Lb Life: Where Are They Now? continued to follow Givens’ story. One year and one month into his weight-loss journey, he weighed 249 pounds. He made it down to 226 pounds by two years—and by then, he and Jessica were married.

Dr. Now approved him for skin removal surgery, estimating that it would take another 10 pounds off his weight. That would finally allow him to reach his goal weight of 215 pounds.
