Over two decades following the release of Lord of War, Nicolas Cage is officially set to return for a long-awaited sequel to the 2005 crime drama, with current plans slated to release the film in 2027.

According to Deadline, the highly anticipated sequel, titled Lords of War, is churning along towards its upcoming theatrical release date next year. As per the outlet, Vertical has officially acquiring the distribution rights for the film, with the studio set to show off a tantalizing first look at the film at Las Vegas’ CinemaCon next week.

As expected, Cage returns to portray the infamous arms dealer Yuri Orlov for the upcoming sequel to his 2005 drama film. This time around, however, Yuri comes into contact with a son he never knew he had (played by It‘s Bill Skarsgård) who is plotting to usurp his father’s role as the world’s deadliest arms supplier.

Co-starring Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks and Greg Tarzan Davis, the film currently does not have an official theatrical release date set, although it has been confirmed to premiere in 2027.

As some viewers might remember, the original Lord of War found Cage playing a heavily fictionalized version of a real-life arms dealer, specifically focusing on his exploits up to and after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Appearing alongside fellow Hollywood heavyweights Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ian Holm and Ethan Hawke, the film wound up earning mixed reviews from critics, although most of its positive reception was geared towards Cage’s central performance.

Of course, Lords of War remains just one of many projects the 62-year-old Cage is currently involved with. Later this year, the Raising Arizona star is set to star in the biographical drama Madden, as well as the superhero mystery series Spider-Noir.

He’s also set to appear in multiple movies that currently lack a formal release date, including The Prince, Fortitude and Best Pancakes in the County.
