The last exchange that Nicole Kidman had with her mother has impacted the way the actress now lives her life.
The Academy Award winner opened up about the final words she heard her late mother, Janelle, speak during a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning that aired on Sunday, Dec. 15. Looking back, Kidman said she had no idea at the time that the conversation would be their last.

“I was going to get on a plane and go back to see her,” Kidman said. “And she was like, ‘Maybe wait a minute. Because I think, you know, you just need to take care of yourself right now, Nikki.’”
In the wake of that final piece of wisdom she received from her mother, Kidman said she is making more of an effort to care for herself. “I say that to other people in the world, and particularly women,” she said. “I think we tend not to take care of ourselves. We’ll take care of everybody else, but the last person is here.”
The Big Little Lies actress compared the last words she heard from her mother to those from her grandmother. “My grandmother left me with, ‘Be happy.’ And my mom said, ‘Take care of yourself,’” she recalled with a smile.
The 57-year-old actress, who shares two children with ex-husband Tom Cruise and two children with husband Keith Urban, said her kids are another reason she wants to focus on caring for herself. “I’m an older mother, so I want to be around for a long time for my girls,” she said. “They’re amazing girls, and I’m lucky to have them. So taking care of myself means so that I can take care of them.”
Back in September, Kidman had only recently arrived in Italy to attend the 2024 Venice Film Festival in support of her latest film, Babygirl, when she learned of her mother’s death. She ultimately chose to skip the event, heading home instead to be with her family.
The Being the Ricardos star later posted a heartfelt message thanking her fans for their messages of support. “Every message we have received from those who loved and admired our Mother has meant more to us than we will ever be able to express,” she wrote to caption a Sept. 12 Instagram post that featured photos of her late mother. “Thank you from our whole family for respecting our privacy as we take care of each other ❤️.”

Kidman reflected further on her grief during her conversation with CBS Sunday Morning. “I love when people say, ‘There’s no limit to your grief,’” she said. “You don’t have to have a time limit on it. You don’t have to be all better by this time. So you’re allowed to constantly let it pass through in waves.”
Kidman reiterated the importance of having ownership over her grieving process. “It’s my mama, my life, and I’m allowed to process it and grieve it in the way I want to,” she said.
