Fans aimed feelings of frustration and disappointment at Nicole Scherzinger after The Pussycat Dolls’ lead singer indicated support for President-elect Donald Trump.

The controversy stemmed from a comment that Scherzinger, 46, added to an Instagram post by Russell Brand on Tuesday, Nov. 5. In the photo, the English actor had a huge smile splashed across his face as he held a red hat above his head. The hat, which looked a lot like the “Make America Great Again” hats that supporters of the former president often wear at his campaign rallies, instead featured a message stitched on in white that read, “MAKE JESUS FIRST AGAIN.”

Brand’s two-part Instagram post also included a screenshot of another of his social media posts that read, “God Bless America,” a message that reminded fans of the comedian’s earlier comments made in support of Trump.

According to screenshots that fans later shared online, Scherzinger left a comment on Brand’s post that read, “Where do I get this hat!!!? 🙏🏽❤️.” Fans interpreted her comment as an indication of her own support of Trump, who emerged victorious from the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election after defeating Democrat Kamala Harris. Media outlets called the race for Trump early on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Though Scherzinger appeared to have deleted her comment as of Thursday, Nov. 7, fans who took screenshots of her message before it disappeared were quick to share them on X, formerly Twitter. Fans also drew attention to Scherzinger’s missing query in the comment section of Brand’s original post, with one telling her, “it’s too late boo, we saw your comment 🤭.”

“Stand by your man! Or hide it to protect your career,” another fan wrote after tagging Scherzinger, adding, “The screenshots have been taken babe.”

“I truly can’t with you you are so disappointing @nicoleshcerzinger,” another Instagram user commented.

Others on X wondered whether the comment might impact Scherzinger’s stage acting career, with Time Out New York’s theater editor suggesting that “the Best Actress Tony race just got a little less competitive.”

“How to lose a Tony in under 30 characters,” another X user agreed.

As of publishing, Scherzinger hasn’t publicly responded to the backlash.
