North America’s fastest saltwater rapids are in this picturesque BC village

It might not be prime paddling or boating season, but there’s never been a more exciting time to visit the world-famous Skookumchuck Narrows (Sechelt Rapids) in the coastal village of Egmont, British Columbia.

Translating to “strong waters” in Chinook jargon, the tidal rapids are considered one of BC’s greatest natural spectacles, and are the fasted saltwater rapids in North America. With 200 billion gallons of water flowing through them, they’re definitely one of the top natural attractions in Egmont and the Sunshine Coast as a whole.

According to Tourism Sunshine Coast, the village is at the crossroads of four major waterways (Sechelt Inlet, Jervis Inlet, Hotham Sound and Agamemnon Channel), making it an idyllic spot for swimming, paddling, and boating in the area’s sheltered bays and coves.

It’s also a great jumping-off point to explore the surrounding Princess Louisa Inlet, Chatterbox Falls, and the Harmony Islands in Hotham Sound.

And if that’s not enough, there are 10 nearby lakes to take a dip in!

Best viewing times for Skookumchuck Narrows

Twice a day, the flow of the saltwater switches, reversing the direction of the ‘incredibly turbulent’ tidal flow of Skookumchuck Narrows. This creates a mesmerizing display of white-water whirlpools.

According to Sunshine Coast Tourism, the difference in water levels between one side of the rapids and the other can exceed nine feet high!

According to their report on the best viewing times of 2024, the best times this month to check it out are the mornings of November 7th to 10th, 20th, and 21st, when the rapids are expected to flow over 20 kilometres an hour!

So if it’s big currents and tidal activity you’re on the lookout for, head to the North Point viewing area. Meanwhile, Sunshine Coast Tourism notes that big waves can be spotted from the viewing area at Roland Point.

Visitors hike to the viewing areas at the provincial park through old-growth forests and past shining lakes on a moderate trail.

How to get there: Take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, Sunshine Coast from West Vancouver, then drive one and a half hours up the Sechelt Inlet to Egmont.
