Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, has announced that it will continue to host the NCAA Division I Women’s and Men’s Golf Championships through 2028. This follows a successful event hosting in May, which led to a two-year extension of the resort’s existing contract with the NCAA.
The North Course at Omni La Costa, renovated by Gil Hanse, will be the venue for the season-ending collegiate championship. This extension means that the course will host the event for five consecutive years, a record in NCAA golf history.
Craig Martin, managing director of Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, expressed satisfaction with the work done by Hanse and his team in restoring the North Course to its championship standards. The course, originally designed by Dick Wilson, has been a popular golf destination since it opened in 1965. It previously hosted notable PGA Tour events, including the Mercedes Championships and the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
As part of the renovation, Hanse introduced design changes to suit the NCAA’s match-play format. These changes aimed to challenge players with more risk-reward decisions during their rounds. One of the significant alterations is a drivable par-4 on No. 11 and a repositioned green on the par-3 16th hole.
In addition to the course renovation, Beau Welling and his firm, Beau Welling Design, led an upgrade of the resort’s golf practice facility. The revamped facility now features Toptracer technology for golf members and instruction.
