An Ontario city is exploring the idea of renaming one of its streets due to the ongoing Canada-U.S. tariff war.

In February, Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca came forward with a member’s resolution that would see the city’s “America Avenue” renamed in honour of Canadian icon and activist Terry Fox.

“Recent tariff threats and trade disputes with the United States have reminded Canadians of the importance of national pride, unity, and the celebration of Canadian heroes who transcend political and economic tensions,” the city’s website reads.

“Patriotism and the recognition of Canadian symbols and figures strengthen our national identity and foster a sense of pride among our residents.”

While the street name has been used for roughly 25 years, a current construction project at the end of the street has raised ideas about its potential renaming.

Vaughan is in the process of building a bridge over Highway 400 to connect Canada Drive and America Avenue, with construction anticipated to be completed by 2026. The overpass is set to be known as the “Canada Drive-American Avenue Bridge,” unless local residents express their desire for a change.

“Before any decision is made on the street renaming, the City wants to understand how residents living on America Avenue feel about this proposed change,” the city wrote.

Residents who live on Vaughan’s America Avenue have until April 24 to complete an online survey to share their views on renaming the street.

“Terry Fox is a celebrated Canadian Athlete who inspired Canadians in his Marathon of Hope and raised millions of dollars for cancer research. His legacy embodies the best of Canadian values, including perseverance, generosity, and a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of others,” the city says.

“Vaughan, as a proud Canadian municipality, has opportunities to further honour Terry Fox’s memory, thereby ensuring that his story continues to inspire future generations.”
