The global tourism industry has witnessed a significant rebound in 2024, with outbound travel returning to pre-pandemic levels. Both leisure and business travel sectors demonstrate strong growth, with Asia contributing significantly to this recovery.

According to the latest World Travel Monitor findings by IPK International and ITB Berlin, global outbound travel in 2024 has seen a remarkable recovery. With a 13% year-on-year increase, the tourism industry has returned to 2019 levels, indicating a full recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outbound travel, in particular, has witnessed a significant upsurge. Travellers from Asia have substantially contributed to this growth, with a positive increase of 33%. Although this is still 15% below the previous peak, it signals a sustained return to pre-pandemic levels in the global travel market. European and Latin American outbound travel saw a rise of 9%, while North American outbound travel increased by 7% compared to 2023.

Spain continues to be the most favoured destination, followed by the USA. The demand for European countries, including Germany, France, and Italy, remains high. Mexico, Turkey, the UK, and Austria are among the most popular destinations.

The primary reason for international travel is leisure, with sun and beach holidays and city breaks, particularly in demand. Round trips, which allow tourists to explore multiple places during a single trip, remain popular.

The business travel sector is also expanding, primarily driven by growth in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) segment. It accounts for approximately two-thirds of all business trips, demonstrating above-average growth.

Most travellers still prefer traditional hotels for their wide range of services. However, alternative accommodations such as holiday apartments and private holiday rentals are gaining popularity. Direct bookings via accommodation and transport providers are increasing, reflecting a trend towards greater flexibility and more personal control over travel options.

The outlook for 2025 remains positive, with a continued interest in outbound travel. Personal experiences and satisfaction levels significantly influence choosing a holiday destination. Accommodation that offers comfort, service, beautiful surroundings, pleasant culinary experiences, cultural highlights, and good value for money are key sought-after elements.

In conclusion, the global tourism industry has demonstrated resilience and adaptability in 2024, returning to pre-pandemic levels. The future outlook remains positive, shifting the focus towards quality and experience in travel choices.
