Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg took to Instagram to mark a major milestone in his marriage with a sweet tribute to husband Chasten.
“Ten years ago tonight, I went on a first date, arriving at the pub with tickets to that night’s (South Bend) Cubs game in my pocket in case our chat over beer went really well, which it did,” Buttigieg wrote alongside a photo of the couple smiling next to a baseball mascot.
He continued: “A decade later, I can’t imagine life without @chasten.buttigieg and the amazing family we have built together. And I can’t wait to see what the next ten years and more will teach us about life and love.”

The couple first met on the dating app Hinge in 2015 and reportedly bonded over their shared sense of humor and love of the Midwest.
They married in 2018 in a ceremony in South Bend, Indiana, where Pete was serving as mayor at the time. In 2021, they welcomed twins, Penelope Rose and Joseph August, via surrogacy, making them one of the most high-profile LGBTQ+ families in American politics.
Buttigieg, the first openly gay Cabinet member in U.S. history, rose to national prominence during his 2020 presidential campaign. Chasten, a teacher and author, has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and education.
The anniversary post quickly drew thousands of likes and comments from fans and fellow politicians, many of whom celebrated the couple’s milestone.
“You two are the best example of empathy and love and kindness. I wish you the best of luck. We love you both,” one comment read.
“Heroes and models for Gay men in a difficult America. Inspiring. Thank you Chasten and Pete!” another user added.
Some even teased a potential presidential run.
“I can’t wait until I can refer to you both as Mr. President and the First Gentleman,” a user wrote. “I’m not yet 60 so I’m hopeful I’ll be able to say these words well before I die!”
One commenter cheekily made a playful reference to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s engagement announcement earlier this week, writing: “Your drama teacher and your Mayor got married.”
“You are our hero!” another wrote. “Thank you both for your courage and dedication to all that is right and good.”
“Congratulations on your love and commitment to each other! Next house the White House,” one of Pete’s followers added under the post.
