CBC Podcasts’ PlayME has released a trailer for its seven-part audio drama Tunnel Runners

Launching on October 30, the series follows Cam, a 16-year-old gifted student whose struggles with anxiety and depression lead him into a labyrinth of hidden subway tunnels beneath Toronto. There, he discovers an underground community known as the Tunnel Runners — a subculture that thrives on its distance from the chaos of the city above.

Tunnel Runners is created by Laura Mullin and Chris Tolley, the founders of Expect Theatre. Mullin is the writer, and Tolley the sound designer.

The weekly series features a large cast of Canadian theatre artists including Tony Nappo, Gabriella Sundar Singh, Peter Fernandes, Charlotte Dennis, Liz Der, Dan Mousseau, Jeff Yung, Michelle Monteith, Zorana Sadiq, Marcia Johnson, Dharini Woollcombe, Ruth Goodwin, Annelise Hawrylak, Marin Stephens, and Olive Tolley.

“Creating the original audio thriller Tunnel Runners has been an exhilarating experience,” wrote Mullin and Tolley in a press release. “It’s allowed us to blend our theatre background with the intimacy and cinematic power of audio drama, crafting a fantastical world we hope will come alive for our listeners. As the theatre, film, and TV industries face significant challenges, we believe audio fiction offers a compelling and accessible outlet for both creators and audiences.”

The three-minute trailer is embedded below. You can also stream it on the CBC website or wherever you get your podcasts.
