Pokémon Go is bringing back this dark- and dragon-type Pokémon for Deino Community Day Classic, a replay of an event originally from June 2022. This rerun takes place on Saturday, May 16 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time.

As expected with a Community Day event, Deino will spawn in huge numbers with a high chance for it to appear shiny. There are also several other bonuses and perks to take advantage of, which we’ve detailed below.

How do I catch a shiny Deino?

As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine), shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, which means that if you keep playing throughout the three-hour window, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an Incense, then quickly tap each Deino to check for shiny ones, running from any that aren’t shiny. Notably, any Deino you’ve already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.

If you evolve Zweilous into Hydreigon from 2-9 p.m. in your local time on May 16, it will learn the charged move Brutal Swing.

If you miss out on evolving it during this period, you will likely be able to evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get Brutal Swing. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the move.

Hydreigon is a powerhouse. As a regular gym/raid attacker, it’s among the cream of the crop as a dark-type. Set it up with Bite and Brutal Swing (its Community Day move, so don’t forget to evolve it during the event) for the most success.

In PvP, Hydreigon does see use across all three leagues, with shadow Hydreigon actually being the preferred pick, if you have one. Set it up with Dragon Breath, Brutal Swing, and Fly to make the most of this three-headed beast in PvP.

The following bonuses will be active during Deino Community Day:

  • Tripled XP for catching Pokémon
  • Incense lasts three hours
  • Lure Modules last one hour
  • Deino will spawn from Lure Modules on May 16 from 2-9 p.m. (past the 5 p.m. event end time), still with its Community Day shiny rate and a chance to have a Special Background
  • Deino special photobombs when taking snapshots
  • Spinning PokéStops during the event period will give themed Field Research Tasks, with chances to get Deino with a Special Background

If you can Mega Evolve Gyarados, Dragonite, Ampharos, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Sceptile, Sableye, Sharpedo, Altaria, Absol, Salamence, Latias, Latios, Rayquaza, Garchomp, or Malamar, you’ll score additional Deino Candy per catch. (Geez, that was a long list.)

If you really love Deino, you can also buy the usual Special Research ticket for $1.99. This ticket will permanently add Deino-themed Special Research Tasks to your list, rewarding Special Background Deino (in addition to other Deino encounters), a Premium Battle Pass, a Rare Candy, and more.
