A recent study by Popmenu reveals that water and non-alcoholic drinks are becoming increasingly popular among diners. The study found that 50% of consumers plan to eat at or order from restaurants during the December holidays, of which 61% typically order non-alcoholic beverages and 33% usually opt for water.

Restaurant operators have also noticed this shift towards non-alcoholic beverages, with 55% confirming that more guests choose water over other drinks.

The Popmenu study included surveys from 874 consumers aged 21 and older and 365 restaurant leaders, conducted in September 2024, and another survey of 1,000 consumers in November 2024.

Despite the trend towards non-alcoholic beverages, there remains a steady demand for alcoholic drinks. Half of the restaurant operators claimed that alcohol purchases have remained consistent year over year, while 22% noted an increase and 28% reported a decline.

Regarding the choice of alcoholic drinks, Margarita was identified as the most popular cocktail during the holiday season, followed by Whiskey Sour, Mimosa, Bloody Mary, and Old Fashioned. Hard liquor was the top pick among those who order alcoholic beverages, with tequila and vodka being the most frequently chosen.

When it comes to non-alcoholic drinks, soft drinks were the preferred choice for 51% of consumers, followed by water and tea. Among those who drink water at restaurants, 42% prefer tap water, 30% prefer bottled water, and 8% prefer sparkling water.
