QMJHL says it is investigating 1990s sexual hazing allegations

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League said it was already investigating sexual allegations detailed in an article published by La Presse on Monday.

In the article, former player Karl Latulippe described his experience as a rookie haunted by the veterans of Shiktimi Sagnen during the 1994-95 season.

Latulippe said incidents of veterans hitting recruits with towels wrapped around soap bars and veterans demanding recruits undress and masturbate on a team bus.Not specified in article. Another Thugnees player that season corroborated details of Latulippe’s event.

A first-round pick by Chictimi in the 1994 QMJHL Draft, Latulippe played six games for the Sagnines before leaving the team.

The league’s interim commissioner, Martin Lavallee, told the Quebec legislature on March 21 that sexual allegations from the 1990s had come to his attention and that the league was investigating. Gilles Courteau announced his retirement in March after testifying about the hockey haze ritual at a state legislative hearing in February.

The league has since hired former Montreal Alouette president Mario Cecchini as its next commissioner. He will take office on May 8.
